Southeast Missouri, and in particular the Missouri Bootheel has become the “place to be” to hunt waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway.  Almost 250,000 acres of rice farms have been developed in the last twenty years, and the ducks and geese are stopping here by the thousands.  Area farmers re-flood their rice fields after harvest and hold the water until the birds migrate back the breeding grounds in the spring.

In addition to all the species of North American ducks and geese, migratory birds of all types can be seen simply by driving around on a self guided tour of the area.   What you see will depend on the time of year you come to look.  Being in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, our area has birding opportunities for all.  Shorebirds are common and plentiful.  The numbers of Eagles and Hawks will amaze you.  Have you seen a Glossy Ibis or a Black Necked Stilt lately?  We have!

In 2007, a group of waterfowl enthusiasts began talking about the need for a way to "get the word out" about the fantastic hunting opportunities available in the Missouri Bootheel.  The Chamber of Commerce and the City of Kennett became involved when a committee was formed by the group.   Area business leaders, farmers, landowners, hunters, and birders, all dedicated Conservationists, have come together to promote our abundant natural resources.

The Missouri Waterfowl Festival is a celebration of the migration!

The Missouri Waterfowl Festival is designed for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts and their families.  Our emphasis is on youth involvement but there will be fun activities for outdoor sports fans of all ages
